FRSC proposes jail terms for drivers in road accidents
Federal Road Safety Corps Marshal Dauda Biu has proposed imposing prison sentences on drivers found responsible for road accidents, following recent tragic incidents in Oyo, Kano, and Kaduna. The incidents included crashes at Gaya Junction in Kano and Tashan Yari in Kaduna, resulting in 18 fatalities on April 18 and 19, 2024, as reported by The PUNCH. Another crash on the Oyo-Ogbomoso route claimed 19 lives on April 14, 2024.
During a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, Biu stressed the importance of strict penalties, including jail terms without the option of fines, to discourage reckless driving. He mentioned that the FRSC has urged state governments to prosecute such drivers rigorously for violating road laws, highlighting Kaduna State’s commitment to this initiative.
Biu emphasized the need for collaboration with the judiciary across all states to expedite the trial of drivers involved in road accidents, ensuring that all offenders face legal consequences as a deterrent to others. He also noted a reduction in fatalities during the 2024 Easter and Eid-el-Fitr periods compared to the previous year, signaling progress in road safety efforts.
