Tyre-Rolling Days: Nostalgic Joys of Ajepako Childhood in the 80s and 90s

Growing up in the 80s and 90s in Nigeria was a time of unforgettable and simple joys, especially for an “ajepako” kid in Oyo town.

The streets were our playground, and the creativity of children was boundless. One of my favorite pastimes was rolling a tire down the street—a simple yet thrilling activity that brought endless fun.

My father, Sikoli, as he was affectionately called by friends often sent me on errands. My trusty tyre became my vehicle of choice, and I would race down the street, even late at night, never wanting to let go. In my playful imagination, I would sometimes urinate inside the tyre, pretending it was fuel. This mischievous act once earned me the worst beating of my life, but it was all part of being a carefree, playful child.

The nights were filled with vivid dreams, often leading to the embarrassment of waking up in a wet bed. These moments, though seemingly small, were significant parts of the joy and innocence of childhood. I wonder what the G’zen bads will tell as their profound childhood memories.
