FG shuts down 47 unity schools in Nigeria

The Federal Government has shut down 47 unity schools across the country.

This was contained in a circular issued to principals by Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, Director of Senior Secondary Education in the Ministry of Education, on Friday, November 21, 2025.

According to her, Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister, had approved the temporary closure of 47 schools due to recent security challenges in some parts of the country.

In Kebbi State, gunmen recently invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga during the early hours, abducting 25 students and killing a staff member, Malam Hassan Makaku, who attempted to resist them.

Also, earlier on Friday, bandits abducted an unknown number of school children as well as staff from St. Mary’s School in Agwara Local Government Area of Niger State.

A report covering the period from 2014 to 2022 indicated that more than 1,680 children were abducted from schools across Nigeria.

There are one hundred and four (104) unity schools in Nigeria.

This follows similar directives in Katsina and Plateau, where schools were closed due to rising banditry attacks on educational institutions.

The directive comes amid a surge in attacks on educational institutions nationwide.
