JUST IN: NCC Bans Citizens Under 18 Years From Owning SIM Cards
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has officially implemented a policy preventing individuals under 18 years from registering and owning SIM cards in Nigeria. This regulation is part of the updated “Registration of Telephone Subscribers Regulations,” aiming to strengthen security in the telecom sector and ensure better control over the use of SIM cards for communication.
The regulations define a “subscriber” as someone who is at least 18 years old, aligning this rule with the NCC’s authority under the Nigerian Communications Act of 2003. While there was debate during the public inquiry session—telecom stakeholders, such as MTN, suggested lowering the age limit to 14—the NCC ultimately retained the age limit at 18. This decision was finalized following consultations with stakeholders to address concerns around digital security and data protection for minors.
These changes also come with a broader push by the NCC to enhance regulatory policies within the telecom sector and reduce the misuse of SIM cards, particularly in fraudulent and untraceable activities.
