NAFDAC, SON warn against flooding Nigerian markets with fake, substandard goods

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have issued stern warnings to producers and suppliers against flooding Nigerian markets with fake and substandard products.

Dr Ifeanyi Okereke, SON Director General, speaking at a one-day stakeholders workshop titled “Growing Businesses Through Standardisation” in Abakaliki on Wednesday, said substandard goods harm a growing economy.

Represented by Mrs Talutu Athan, Director of Corporate Affairs at SON, Okereke explained the workshop aimed to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of standardisation and foster cooperation with SON.

He stressed that compliance with standards is crucial for economic and industrial growth.

“Today, a company’s reputation matters as much as the products it produces. Customers want to know not only what you make but how you make it.

“For Nigerian products to succeed beyond our borders, they must meet established benchmarks, which are designed not to frustrate but to support producers.

“We cannot do this alone; we need your partnership.

“SON is determined to fight fake goods because when counterfeit products flood the market, genuine producers suffer reputational damage.

“Standards are not arbitrary rules but the foundation of resilience and growth. They give you a competitive edge and protect your investments,” he said.

Mr Emeka Orajaka, NAFDAC Coordinator in Ebonyi, pledged his agency’s commitment to combating fake products and urged producers to ensure certification before market release.

Resource person Mr Lawal Ayanda underlined the importance of using locally made Nigerian cables and wires, describing them as superior due to their fire resistance and SON certification.

Mrs Maryrose Ugwueche, SON State Coordinator in Ebonyi, thanked stakeholders including the Nigeria Police Force, Federal Road Safety Corps, and Nigeria Immigration Services for their participation.

Okereke also shared SON’s toll-free lines for reporting substandard goods: 08099937380 and 07056990099.
