WAEC Debunks Viral Claim of 2025 WASSCE Cancellation, Labels It Fake News
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has firmly denied a viral social media claim suggesting that the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has been cancelled due to widespread exam malpractice.
In a statement issued on Sunday, July 20, 2025, WAEC described the rumour as false, misleading, and the product of “mischief-makers” bent on creating confusion and panic among candidates and stakeholders.
The fake statement, which made the rounds on various platforms on Saturday, alleged that the Federal Ministry of Education, in conjunction with WAEC, had nullified the entire 2025 exam due to massive leakages and coordinated distribution of question papers via digital platforms.
However, WAEC, through its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adesina, described the claim as spurious and categorically denied issuing any such notice.
The said examination has not been cancelled,” the Council clarified.
WAEC noted that the marking of answer scripts has just been concluded and assured the public that results will be released on or before Thursday, August 4, 2025.
“Though the source of the information cannot be confirmed, the Council is certain that this falsehood is being peddled by elements determined to damage WAEC’s reputation and stir unnecessary fear,” the statement read.
The Council also reminded the public that all official announcements are made exclusively through its verified social media channels, accredited news outlets, and the Public Affairs Department.
“We urge all stakeholders, especially candidates and parents, to disregard the fake publication,” WAEC concluded.
